The beginnings of Iskra go back to 1946 when on March 8 a government order founded the Iskra Company for activities in the field of electrotechnics and mechanics.
The most important historic milestone in the operations of Iskra Sistemi, d. d., jointstock company, was in 1964, when the »Biro za avtomatizacijo železnic« (BAŽ), the Division for Automation, was founded as part of Iskra. It was transformed several times, and for years it represented the core of the company’s employment base, today embedded in Traffic Division.
Since its inception, the company has undergone many organizational and other changes brought about by the social and political environment of the former Yugoslavia and finally by Slovenia’s independence. In 1990 Iskra, which was spread all arond Yugoslavia, counted more than 32,000 employees. Due to independence processes of Yugoslav republics, Iskra quickly dissolved.
The majority of Slovenian Iskra companies started a process of reuniting under Iskra Group in 1991. Iskra Group today has 1,800 employees in six Slovenian Iskra companies.
In recent years, Iskra Sistemi, d.d. has undergone two important mergers. The merger with Iskra SYSEN d.d. brought power distribution automation and control program. It is embodied in Power Division of Iskra Sistemi. Another merger with Iskra Transmission d.d. attributed a rich portfolio of microwave transmission and optical transmission programs, as well as full coverage of packet and IP communications, which augmented with Power Line Carrier program to form today's cornerstones of Telecommunications Division.
Through these two branches of the company, two other important milestones for Iskra Sistemi need to be mentioned; the year 1949, when the production of the basic elements of power automation – protective relays – started in TELA, the electric appliances factory, and 1952 when the Institute of Electronic Communications was founded.
